Prepare for Licensure and Transition to Professional Practice

Throughout the semester I quickly realized that my original SMART goal I had set out to achieve may not be as easy to meet as I had thought. I had originally planned to study for 4 hours each week while in clinical, but this goal was a bit too ambitious for me. When I made this goal, I didn’t consider how much time my off-campus jobs, tutoring, and other assignments would take out of my free time. Even though I didn’t spend 4 hours a week dedicated to studying for the NCLEX, many of the assignments I completed were helping me prepare for the NCLEX, which I also didn’t anticipate.…

Attaining and Protecting Your Professional Nursing License

I intend to become licensed in Maine since I have already accepted a position at Maine Medical Center, and an additional per-diem position at Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook. Maine is a nurse licensure compact state. I do want to become a travel nurse after few years and may work in states that are not compact licensure states however, such as Massachusetts.  The application for licensure for the state of Maine can be completed online, which I am happy about because it is much easier and efficient. The application for Maine licensure does not require an official transcript, but verification sig off from the director of the program is required…

    Inclusive Care: Maternity

If I was assigned this birthing couple, I think I would have a lot of questions because I have never worked with a pregnant transgender male before. I also would feel worried since I have never taken care of a transgender birthing couple, and would want to provide the best care possible. My first priority just as the couple’s provider said would be to ensure I was respectful of their pregnancy and that all the other healthcare workers and staff were as well. It is one of my personal values to treat everyone with kindness and respect, so a birthing couple that others may be unfamiliar with should still be…

    Career Development Reflection

The first skill the nurses identified that I would like to develop over time as a nurse is understanding from experience. Many of the nurses in the video explained how understanding from experience helps them make connections with their patients and provide comfort in their time of need. Learning to be grateful for every day as a nurse is also something I learned from this movie. All these nurses talked about what a privilege it is to know at the end of the day that you have helped someone in some way, and I would really like to implement that reflectiveness when I begin practicing as a nurse. Finally, I…

    Prepare for Transition Reflection

When looking forward to graduation and obtaining my nursing license, I am amazed at how quickly it is approaching. It feels like just yesterday that I was starting my college career, unsure of where I would be in four years. I am most excited to acquire my first nursing job, and hopefully build relationships with other new grads and peers on my floor. I would like to celebrate my victories and progress with my friends and family. My family has always been so supportive of my goals, and they have continued to provide endless reassurance through my college and nursing school experience. I would also like to celebrate my nursing…

    Presenting Change

Our final dissemination project was presented to the Bean 5 nursing staff in the form of posters hung up on the unit, and survey’s dispersed to the staff. Unfortunately, we did not acquire any feedback from our surveys, which is slightly disappointing because we cannot accurately assess the staff’s response. We may not have received feedback on our surveys due to multiple reasons. One reason is our survey was only posted on the unit for about a week and a half, so we may not have had enough exposure. Another reason is we relied on the unit educator to disperse our educational posters around the unit, so these may not…

    Post Hospital Elder Life Program

Throughout my volunteering in the hospital elder life program (HELP), I was able to work with multiple patients who were experiencing delirium. This helped me realize that by orienting the patient, socializing with them, and ensuring the patient was getting adequate sleep, nutrition, and fluids delirium can be prevented. The HELP program provides a great opportunity to ensure a patient isn’t developing delirium and if the patient is, the volunteers in the program can notify the nurse so interventions can be implemented.              The most meaningful part of my HELP volunteering experience was when I got to do a friendly visit with a patient who didn’t receive many visitors. This patient…
