    Proposing Change

This is the Final Project Proposal for Clinical Group 8. Our project examines the use of oral care and how it is used to prevent tracheostomy infections. Our project outlines how education on oral care will be implemented and evaluate the effectiveness of the education. Authors are Brett Collard, Hanna Freeman, Grace Howard, Sophia Jones, Shannon O’Roak, Celine Pelton, and Rhiannon Regan. If there are any questions about this project, please contact myself, Shannon O’Roak, at @soroak Since researching and composing a project proposal, I have learned a lot about our topic, which is the affect oral care has on tracheostomy related infections. I always knew that oral care was…

Prioritizing Emotional Well-Being and Resilience in the Care of Older People

During the pandemic, I did have conversations with elderly individuals which were primarily my grandparents. My Nanny lived alone in an assisted living facility during the pandemic, which was very lonely for her. She kept herself busy by calling friends and family and talking with them and having visitors such as close family members take her on drives. My Nanny did demonstrate immense resilience through this time since she spent a majority of the beginning of the pandemic by herself. She wasn’t even able to socialize with other members of her assisted living facility due to the risk of their age group and their risk for COVID transmission. I also…

    Telemedicine in Acute Care

Before learning about telemedicine and telehealth in class, I was unaware that there was a difference between the two. I now understand that telemedicine allows a provider to diagnose, prescribe, and treat a patient all virtually when a patient is in a healthcare facility. This reminds me of the tele sitters they utilize in the hospital to watch fall risk or elopement risk patients. Telemedicine is a useful tool for nurses and providers because it allows for the staff in the health care facility to prioritize their patients that can’t be treated through telemedicine. Telehealth is different from telemedicine because telehealth is used to contact patients in a primary care…

    Needle Exchange Program

Before our class presentation on the Needle Exchange Program, I didn’t know much about the inner functions of the program, and how much it helps the community. I saw the needle exchange program as beneficial before this presentation because it helps protect members of the community and promotes safety and safe recreational drug administration. While I do believe our first priority as nurses is to encourage the cessation of recreational drug use, this is not always possible. Some patients are not ready to quit recreational drug use when we see them for treatment, and at this stage our priority becomes keeping them safe.              The presentation and class discussion on the…

    Human Trafficking

Before the presentation and class discussion on human trafficking last week, I had significant knowledge of human sex trafficking, but limited knowledge on human labor trafficking. I knew many of the risk factors associated with sex trafficking we discussed in class, such as lack of social support, financial concerns, housing concerns, and impaired family dynamics. I have lived in Maine my whole life, so I have learned on multiple occasions how prevalent sex trafficking is in our state, which is probably surprising to many. However, I did not know how popular labor trafficking was, especially in Maine. I don’t think I fully understood how labor trafficking worked until our class…

    Planning Change

I anticipate that our dissemination project will run smoothly, since our group I already communicating very well, and we see each other every week at our clinical placement. I do anticipate our project being a little more difficult when we all begin preceptorship because we will be on different schedules. I think we will still be able to communicate through this challenge however, because we have already made a group chat to communicate questions, ideas, and tasks.              The plan I have envisioned for conflict management is to assign tasks for our project ahead of time. This way, if someone isn’t completing their portion of the assignment/project, we can revisit the…

      Disaster Nursing

As a nurse, you are responsible for the care of your patients and their safety in the event of a disaster. All emergency plans are centered around the best way to keep patients and staff out of harm’s way as much as possible. On top of caring for their patient’s, nurses are also responsible for triaging of patients, if necessary, to ensure care is efficient and the most people can be helped. Nurses will also coordinate places for patients to stay if they aren’t assigned to a room, and they will help implement the emergency plan while remaining calm and professional. As you can imagine, the task of a nurse…

Pre-Hospital Elder Life Program Eportfolio Post           To my knowledge currently, delirium is an acute process that frequently affects the elder population in the hospital setting. Delirium is acute confusion, which is often misunderstood as dementia. Ways to prevent delirium include assessing patient mental status at least once per shift, re-orienting patients to their room, preventing infections such as UTIs, reorienting patients to person, place, and time, and providing mind stimulating tools such as crossword puzzles or books for the patient to read. It is important to be able to recognize delirium in patients because it can impair healing in patients.             I have previously experienced caring for a patient who is…

Excerpt of The Effects of Implanted Birth Control on Fertility

This paper is an influence paper and was written due to an evidenced based practice course. Myself (Shannon O’Roak), Hanna Freeman, and Sophie Jones examined the effects of birth control on overall long-term fertility rates. We felt that this was a critically important topic since reproductive education is essential to all women of reproductive age. We found that birth control effects fertility rates short term after use, but after approximately 6 months, fertility rates return to normal. This is useful information for women try to become pregnant or trying to avoid conception. If you would like to read the full paper, contact soroak@une.edu for password
